Encyclopedia > Cudbear

Cudbear is a dye extracted from lichens that produces colours in the purple range.


It was developed by Dr Cuthbert Gordon of Scotland: production began in 1758, and it was patented in 1766.


Cudbear was the first dye to be invented in modern times, and one of the few dyes to be credited to a named individual.

The Cudbear is a highly territorial predator originating on the Cthelle Deathworld.
Cudbears have a thick coat of deep purple hairs which insulate it against the intense cold of its habitat.
This purple pigment is derived from the the native lichens which are the primary foliage and food source for the high mountain herbivores it preys upon and is accumulated in the hairs as a natural camouflage.
