Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point is a United States airfield near New Bern, North Carolina, in the eastern part of the state. It was built in 1941, and was commissioned in 1942 as Cunningham Field, named in honor of United States Marine Corps aviator, Lt. Col. Alfred A. Cunningham, but was later renamed.
During World War II, the facility was used to train Marines for service in the Pacific theater, and also served as a base for anti-submarine operations. Cherry Point also helped during the Vietnam War by deploying three A-6 Intruder squadrons to the Far East.
As of the early 2000s, MCAS Cherry Point is the largest Marine Corps air station in the world. It boasts four EA-6B Prowler squadrons, four AV-8B Harrier squadrons, one unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) squadron and one C-130 squadron.
