United States Navy - dKosopedia (6082 words)

Current Navy plans call for reducing the fleet of nuclear attack submarines from 54 to 41-45 submarines, with the number possible going as low as 33.
Much of the Navy's current fleet fits a template set by President Ronald Reagan during the Cold War, which in turn was based on a model of warfare drawn from the Naval battles of World War II modified to fit the new role played by nuclear weapons.
Frigate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1671 words)
In the 17th century, frigates were masterpieces of engineering and design; the British added more sails and weapons, the Dutch made frigates with a shallow draft and the French added bow and stern weapons and Baroque designs.
Many modern frigates have landing decks aft and can carry helicopters, which give them extra capabilities: the helicopters can be used for reconnaissance tasks (bearing radars), have anti-submarine capabilities (by dropping sonobuoys or wire-mounted sonars, and carrying torpedoes and depth-charges), are invaluable for rescue operations, and can also perform other support duties such as ferrying.
Some new classes of frigates are optimized for high-speed deployment and combat with small craft ahead of the usual idea of sea combat between equal opponents, an example of this school of thought is the American Littoral Combat Ship, as exemplified by the first ship of the type, USS Freedom.
