Amy was born in Houston, Texas. He learned how to play clarinet before joining the Army, and during his time in service, picked up the tenor saxophone. After his discharge, he attended and graduated from Kentucky State College. He worked as an educator in Tennessee while playing in midwestern jazz clubs. In the mid-1950s he relocated to Los Angeles and signed with Pacific Jazz Records. Up until his death he was married to singer and recording artist Merry Clayton.He also did a solo on The Doors song Touch Me. Curtis Amy was of the same generation as Booker Ervin, David Fathead Newman, James Clay and Wilton Felder, but his time in the jazz spotlight was brief.
Amy’s final album for the label Katanga is regarded as his masterpiece; it featured the legendary trumpeter Dupree Bolton as well as Ray Crawford and Jack Wilson.
Curtis Amy's tunes are a big plus, some nice stuff; he is a much underrated jazz musician.

Tenor and soprano saxophonist Curtis Amy came out of the classic Texas tenor tradition, and enjoyed considerable success on the west coast not only in a jazz context, but with soul and rock artists, including Ray Charles, The Doors and Carol King.
The three horns of Amy's frontline blend in an immediately rich taste; their complex and subtle full flavors unfold gradually and are nourishing far longer than anything merely fleet and sweet.
At age 67, Amy's come to the casual but distinguished poise of his very contemporary music through decades of professional life, including three years as musical director of Ray Charles' orchestra, many seasons of West Coast tours with the soul greats, and numerous studio sessions in which he conquered the world.
