Well-known in the aviation field by this time, Glenn Hammond Curtiss won the first American award, the Scientific American Trophy, for an airplane flight when he flew the 'June Bug' 5090 ft (1552m) in 1 min 42.5 sec on July 4, 1908.
Curtiss also went on to win the first international speed event, at about 47mph (75.6 km/h), on August 28, 1910.
In order to gain a sort of a rapid reaction force the AMD acquired five C-46 Commandos and UH-12 Raven helicopters, which were intended for use as transports for Trujillos troops.
The 1st Commando Group was declared operational this year and the FAD also received a T-28A Trojan through MAP for evaluation.
It was organized into one COIN squadron with the remaining Mustangs, T-41Ds, OH-6As Texans and Fennecs, one transport squadron with the old C-46 Commando and C-47 transports, one light helicopter squadron with Alouette and Lamas and the Military Aviation School equipped with a few Texan and Trojans.
