Encyclopedia > Cutter John

Cutter John is a fictional character in the 1980s comic strip Bloom County by Berke Breathed. Cutter was a disabled Vietnam War veteran who was very popular with the ladies, particularly school teacher Bobbi Harlow and best friend to the animals of Bloom County, often playing Star Trek with them (his chair would be the Enterprise, which they called the Enterpoop). Once, he and Opus the penguin were lost at Sea while attempting to cause havoc at the South African embassy in Washington, DC. Cutter was captured by a Soviet submarine, but Opus had amnesia so he was in the USSR for months. Eventually Cutter was traded for Bill the Cat. He is one of the earliest characters in Bloom County, first appearing in The Academia Waltz. Cutter most likely got his name from the "Trapper John" character from M*A*S*H.
