Cuyahoga County is a county located in the state of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 1,393,978. Its county seat is Cleveland6. Cuyahoga County is a part Greater Cleveland, an informal metropolitan area. The county is named after the Native American word (possibly Algonquin) Cuyahoga, which means "twisted river." The name is also assigned to the Cuyahoga River, which bisects the county. 19th-century U.S. President James A. Garfield was born in Cuyahoga County. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,226 km˛ (1,246 mi˛). 1,187 km˛ (458 mi˛) of it is land and 2,038 km˛ (787 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 63.19% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 67.35% White, 27.45% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.81% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.50% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 3.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 571,457 households out of which 28.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.40% are married couples living together, 15.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.90% are non-families. 32.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. In the county the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 89.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $39,168, and the median income for a family is $49,559. Males have a median income of $39,603 versus $28,395 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,272. 13.10% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.40% of those under the age of 18 and 9.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
