In Greek mythology, Cynosura was a nymph (an Oread) on Mount Ida, Crete. According to some legends, she nursed Zeus when he was being hidden from his father, Cronus. In gratitude, Zeus placed her in the stars when she died.
It is also very close to the north celestial pole, making it the current north pole star.
Much more rarely, it is sometimes called Cynosura.
"Polaris" comes from Stella Polaris, the Latin form of its common name "Pole Star." The Greek name Cynosura (Κυνόσουρα) means "tail of the dog" and is the source of the English word cynosure.
