The competition was traditionally a pure knockout tournament. All ties were two-legged, except the final. Knockout (K.O.), or simply knock, is a winning criterion of many ringsports, such as boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai and others. ...

However the format of the competition changed radically in the season 2002/03 and since then the format has a lot of similarities with the UEFA Champions League. That caused difficulities for weak teams to make the suprize.
