Cytokeratins are intermediate filament keratins found in the intracytoplasmic cytoskeleton of epithelial tissue.
Cytokeratins are usually found in pairs comprising a type I cytokeratin and a type II cytokeratin.
The intermediate filaments of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton, which the cytokeratins are one of its three components, have been probed to associate also with the ankyrin and spectrin complex protein network that underlies the cell membrane.

The presence of this cytokeratin is diagnostic of neoplastic disease.
The extracellular cytokeratins have a molecular weight of approximately 40 to 46 kilodaltons and are related to approximately 42 to 48 kd proteins found on the cell surface of neoplastic epithelial cells.
The presence of cytokeratins in the tumor cells is diagnostic of the epithelial origin of the cells.
