All D1 Class Trams have an traction braking controller with an intergral deadman's trigger the driver MUST release and reapply every 1 minute, if an alarm sounds they must release and reapply immediately, otherwise magnetic track brakes are applied at full force.

Originally driver could hold it down conintuoulsy while the tram was moving, if driver took their hand off, an alarm would sound, followed soon by track brake application. If after four mintutes it had been held-down continuously and the tram stopped, the driver would get an audible warning and the tram would not move until the driver had released it. There was also an alternative deadman's button on the side of the armrest. Drivers discovered that if the armrest were dropped low enough, this button would stay pressed without the driver appying any pressure, they still had to be released every four minutes when coming to a stop. But as soon as the manegement discoverd this, their reaction was vigilance control, actually a deadman's vigilance device, and hence the notice in the cab "Vigilance control now fitted, release and reapply every 1 minute, if an alarm sounds, release and reapply immediately." A Deadmans vigilance device is a more elaborate version of a deadmans control with requires a motorman to release it periodically say every 30 seconds. ...

Soon a Melbourne cable tramway system was running from the city to nearby suburbs, but as the city grew the technical limits of the cable tram system became apparent, and electric trams were developed for lines to more distant suburbs.
After World War II other Australian cities began to replace their trams with buses, and by the 1970s Melbourne was the only Australian city with a major tram network (there is one tramline in Adelaide, running down to Glenelg, and there are also tourist tramlines in Bendigo and several other cities around Australia).
Melbourne resisted the trend, partly because Melbourne's wide streets and geometric street pattern makes trams more practicable than in many other cities, partly because of resistance from the unions, and partly because the Chairman of the MMTB, Sir Robert Risson, successfully argued that the cost of ripping up the concrete-embedded tram tracks would be prohibitive.
