A DBSO is type of specially converted railway carriage, and is short for Driving Brake Standard Open. A batch of fourteen, numbered 9701 to 9714 were produced by converting a standard class coach with brake van (Brake Standard Open or BSO), adding a driving cab with equipment that allows a locomotive to be driven remotely. Using a system known as push-pull, the driver in the DBSO can drive the locomotive, even though it is at the rear of the train.
Thirteen are still in service with 'one' Anglia, although they are gradually being replaced by the DVT. The fourteenth, No. 9706, was damaged beyond repair when it derailed after hitting a cow.
