Presumably, DDCD drives will be available in both player and recording versions, and a DDCD rewritable drive would presumably also write to standard CD+RW and CD-R media, and play all of the CD pre-recorded formats.
Although no pricing has been announced for any DDCD product as yet, Sony and Philips have indicated that both the players and drives, and presumably the media as well, will be considerably more expensive than corresponding 650MB products, at least for a period of time after they are first introduced.
DDCD products, at least for a year or two, would provide better margins and higher profit levels for all of the companies producing them.
