DMSO can be reacted with methyl iodide to form a sulfoxonium ion which can be reacted with sodium hydride to form a sulfur ylide.
DMSO is also employed as a rinsing agent in the electronics industry and, in its deuterated form (DMSO-d6), is a useful solvent in NMR due to its ability to dissolve a wide range of chemical compounds and its minimal interference with the sample signals.
In the medical field DMSO is predominantly used as a topical analgesic, a vehicle for topical application of pharmaceuticals, as an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant.

DMSO, used extensively by arthritis sufferers, is an anti-inflammatory that has been shown clinically to relieve pain, increase circulation, repair tissue damage, stop the growth of bacteria and fungi, soothe burns, enlarge small blood vessels, soften scar tissue, and fight degenerative diseases.
DMSO alleviates Rheumatoid Arthritis (by deactivating Hydroxyl Free Radicals which are one of the principal causes of the Inflammation and Pain associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis).
DMSO (temporarily) causes Halitosis in the form of a garlic-like odor of the breath (this odor is very unpleasant and appears to be the major practical drawback in the usage of DMSO).
