Nirrti using the DNA Resequencer

In the fictional universe of the science fiction TV show Stargate SG-1, the DNA Resequencer was a device used by the Ancients to make people more advanced. It worked by realgining a subject's DNA and upgradeing their brain activity. Image File history File links Metamorphosis_(Stargate_SG-1). ... The Machine

The typical human brain is usually between 5 and 10 percent active at any given moment. The Ancients were far more advanced than this. Their brains were at least 80-90 precent active. The DNA Resequencer may have been a factor responsible for this. The alterations made by the machine evolve a human (or Ancient) to a state closer to that of Ascension. Before ascenion, as a users brain eveloved, their intelligence increased. The user also obtained supernatural abilities. The machine gives users increased health, a perfect memory, telekinesis, telepathy, the power to heal by touch, super human senses, and super-human strength. In the case of Jonas Quinn, it gave him precognition. Once the machine evolves someone to a state where their brain is 90% active, they ascend. It is unclear whether the Ancients actually used the machine to gain their ablities and Ascend, or whether, they just got them through evolution. If the latter is the case, it is unclear why the machine was constructed. Daniel Jackson and a Zen Monk meditate to think on the complexities of Ascension. ... Psychokinesis (literally mind-movement) or PK is the more commonly used term today for what in the past was known as telekinesis (literally distant-movement). Two Additonal factors should be noted:

  • In the episode "Epiphany" a time dilation field is discovered that was intended to allow its inhabitants time to ascend "on their own". This implies that huamns do have the ability to evolve to ascension without the machine. However, these people devoted their entire lives to the persuit of ascension and to being pure of spirit. This implies that for a person to ascend without their brain being 90% active it takes work, devition, and purity of spirit. Forr more on the difference between spiritual and evolutional ascension see: Asension
  • In "The Fifth Race" the Repository of the Ancients upgraded O'Neill's brain to a state of 90% in order for him to be capable to handle the imense amount of information it held. He did not ascend.

Goa'uld and Tauri use

In the episode "Metamorphosis" Nirrti used the machine to manipulate the DNA of people living in a nearby village in an attempt to create more advanced humans. She eventually wanted to have a host with all the powers the machine could provide her with. She was not aware of ascension at the time. In the episode "Prototype", a second device was discovered, along with an advanced Human/Goa'uld-hybrid clone of Anubis, Khalek. The machine gave him extermely advanced abilities and he almost ascended.
