The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is India's premier research organisation for defence related matters. It functions as a wing of the Department of Defence Research and Development. It was formed in 1958 from the amalgamation of the Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP) with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO).
Several major projects for the development of missiles, armaments, light combat aircraft, radars, and electronic warfare systems are on hand, and significant achievements have already been made in several such technologies.
DRDO in its endeavour to promote advanced research leading to seeding of new technologies in academic institutions has been interacting with many Universities in the country.
The MOU envisaged closer interaction between DRDO Scientists and the faculty from BU to promote joint research in specific scientific and technological areas of interest to DRDO and to facilitate DRDO labs in conducting academic programmes.
The Center shall be operated by the Director, Faculty of BU, additional faculty (to be appointed for the various activities of the Center), visiting scientists, adjunct faculty (scientists deputed to the Center by DRDO), core staff of technicians and other supporting staff, and temporarily appointed research scholars.
DRDO's expertise in explosives and related technologies, and in systems engineering and integration was the key to the five devices tested by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.
The DRDO, DAE and navy together have spent a whopping total of Rs 20 billion on the ATV -- on its design drawings from Russia, civilian construction work, establishing test beds and testing facilities on the east coast and procurement of related equipment.
DRDO sources say the land-based prototype testing facility of the submarine reactor has been completed successfully and a training facility to familiarise with the nuclear submarine's power plant has also been set up.
