NationMaster - Encyclopedia: DSL access multiplexer

A digital subscriber line access multiplexer, (DSLAM) is a multiplexer located in the telephone company exchange that provides consumers access to DSL services over twisted pair copper cabling.

The device separates the voice and data components from the subscriber lines and aggregates the data for sending over the network. The DSLAM usually aggregates lines at a contention ratio of 50:1 or 20:1.

	As of 2005, DSL provides the principal competition to cable modems for providing high speed Internet access to home consumers in Europe and North America; although on average, cable is much faster than DSL in most commercial situations.
	DSL takes advantage of this unused part of the circuit by creating 4312.5 Hz wide channels starting between 10 and 100 kHz, depending on how the system is configured.
	At the exchange a digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) terminates the DSL circuits and aggregates them, where they are handed off onto other networking transports.
