DVT diagnoses had to be confirmed by clinical tests (like a scan) or a satisfactory validation study of the accuracy of the diagnosis performed.
For the purposes of the review, DVT cases had to be new and not to be recurrent, combined with pulmonary embolism, and due to any cause.
The causes of DVT were attributed to cancer or previous hospital admission, for about a quarter to a third of cases for each cause.
