d+pad is a web comic written and created by Joseph B. Elkouby, alias yiddles. It premiered on November 30, 1999, and was last updated on January 19, 2004. The comic is set at VGS, a video game store situated in yiddles' home country of Canada. The comic concerns the workers' daily encounters with customers and the troubles they cause, whether via stealing, taxes, generally bothering the employees, or otherwise. Characters Employees Joe - Joe is manager at VGS, and is typically cynical about both work and life. He views his job as a necessary evil, a way to ensure that he has an income. Andy - Andy is a sales clerk at VGS, and works solely to support his addiction to arcade game Street Fighter Third Strike. Andy is usually caustic towards customers as well as work mates. Rick - Rick is also a sales clerk, and a video game enthusiast. Working at VGS is his dream job, as it allows him access to countless video games, as well as customers with whom he can share his knowledge. Rick exploded upon the arrival of the Game Boy Advance, as the event was too large a shock for him. However, he returned later in the comic without a full explanation. Sam - Sam was the original manager at VGS, until he was promoted to district manager. He reappears on various occasions to see how things are going along at his old work place, and also to become the "Add-On Ninja," planting extra purchases on the counter in order to raise sales.
Customers Indie Jones - Indie Jones is interested in all things obscure: music, video games, anime, foods, and any other categories. His reputation precedes him, with other customers recognizing him for his indie tendencies. He typically lists interests which other customers are not versed in, such as Japanese games or alternative music. Kids - The various kids who appear throughout the comic are typically interested in Pokémon cards and demo stations, and usually travel in groups. They are disliked for the rarity with which they make a worthwhile purchase.
