The movie follows Charlie, a New York based Irish playwright (Martin Sheen), who returns to Ireland for a few days for the funeral of his "Da" or father (Barnard Hughes), and during the time that he spends in the home and neighbourhood of his youth, we see replayed, through his mind's eye, several scenes which were the formation of the man he became in later years. He encounters the ghost of his father and has conversations with him, and we also see arguments and other dealings with his mother, his younger self, friends, employers and even his first encounter with a member of the opposite sex, namely a local girl, nicknamed the Yellow Peril, due to her platinum blonde hair and dubious reputation. After his few days in Ireland, he returns to New York, satisfied that he has finally reconciled himself with his father, something he was never able to do when his Da was alive.

The movie (and the play) was set in Dalkey, an upper-class suburb of Dublin, Ireland, and indeed the movie was filmed on location there too. For the eagle-eyed viewer, the playwright, Hugh Leonard, actually makes a cameo appearance in the movie, as a pall-bearer during the funeral.
