The Da'an District (Chinese: 大安區; Wade Giles: Ta-an; Taiwanese: Tōa-an-khu) is an important educational, commercial, residential and cultural district of Taipei City. The name of the district means "great safety" or "great peace", and the district is named after a village that was once located near the intersection of Xinyi and Fuxing S. Roads. Daan has numerous shopping areas. On Zhongxiao East Road, Dunhua South Road and neighboring alleys, there are numerous clothing shops, innumerable restaurants serving world cusines, and major department stores including two branches of the Sogo Department Store, the Ming-Yao Department Store, and the immense 24-hour Eslite bookstore. Specialty markets include the Jianguo (Chien-kuo) Weekend Flower Market, the Jianguo Weekend Jade Market, and the Kuanghua (Computer and Electronics) Bazaar. Daan also boasts some of Taipei's most expensive residential real estate, clustered around the tree-lined Dunhua South Road, Anhe Road and Renai Road areas. These locales also boast numerous upscale fashion boutiques, elite retail shops including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, and many of Taipei's renowned "lounge bars". Places of worship in Daan include the Mormon Temple, the Taipei Mosque, the Epicospal Church, and the Holy Family Catholic Church. The Holy See maintains a representative office in this district.
