Tachen Islands (or Dàchén Qúndǎo) is a group of islands off the coast of Zhejiang, the People's Republic of China. It was controlled by the Republic of China (Taiwan) (the government of all China until 1949) until an evacuation by the American Navy in 1955. It began with the takeover of the KMT by the right-wing General Chiang Kai-shek and purges of leftist and Communist members in 1926 and ended in 1949 with an unofficial cessation of major hostilities, with the Communists controlling mainland China and the Nationalists controlling Taiwan, Penghu, and several outlying Fujian ese islands.
In December 1949 Chiang proclaimed Taipei, Taiwan, the temporary capital of the Republic of China and continued to assert his government as the sole legitimate authority in China.
On January 20, 1955, the PLA took nearby Yi Kiang Shan, with the entire ROC garrison of 720 troops killed defending the island.
