Dacoity is a term used in the Indian subcontinent for armed robbery. The word is the anglicised version of the local word dakaethee, from dakoo, the local word for armed robber.


The most famous member of this profession was possibly India's Phoolan Devi. The term 'dacoit' is often used simply to mean 'bandit'. See also Thuggee.
