Daendels was the general governor who made the Anyer-Panarukan road. This road was made to protect Java from British invasion. Now this road is known as Pantura.
Herman Willem Daendels (Hattem, October 21, 1762 - Ghana, May 2, 1818) was a Dutch politician who served as the 36th Governor General of the Dutch East Indies between 1808 - 1811.
Born in Hattem, Netherlands, on the 21st October 1762, he was the son of Burchard Johan Daendels, the mayoral secretary, and Josina Christina Tulleken.
Daendels was close witness to the French revolution.
When Stadholder William V was reinstated in 1787, Daendels left the country, moving to France.
There he founded the Batavian legion, a regiment of Dutch exiles who returned in 1795 as part of the French army sent to liberate the country from the stadholders.
Daendels was not afraid to use his military reputation to swing the balance in the political struggles that characterised the early Batavian Republic.
