The Daihatsu Rocky was a small SUV sold in the United States from 1988 through 1992 to compete with the Chevrolet/Geo Tracker SUV. Sales were extremely poor, with just 295 sold in 1991.


Power came from a 1.6 L DOHC I4 engine.

The name "Daihatsu" is a combination of the first kanji (Japanese character) for Osaka (大) and the first of the word "engine manufacture" (発), put together they are pronounced "daihatsu".
The same was thought about Daihatsu's operations in Chile, where it's a well known brand for its '70s models as the Charade or Cuore, after sales of around 10 units in 2004 and 2005 (each year).
Daihatsu has supplied cars under different badges to many different automakers in the past, and also supplies engines and transmissions to Malaysia's #2 carmaker, Perodua, which sells cars in the UK and Malaysia.

The company was renamed Daihatsu in 1951 and became dedicated in manufacturing small and compact sedans ever since.
Daihatsu Motors have created a number of popular small and compact cars sold internationally, including the Charade and Rocky to name a few.
It's a very reliable car and it's sad that Daihatsu had to pull out of the States back in 1994.
