The Daily Howler is a center-left American political blog written by Bob Somerby since 1998. The style is at once earnest and sarcastic. Somerby's main focus is on criticizing what he considers the mainstream media's frequently biased or lazy coverage of many issues and especially the tendency to latch on to a generally agreed "script" with little regard for the actual facts that frequently contradict the script. For instance, in the runup to the US 2000 election it was frequently said or assumed that Gore was untruthful, but (according to Somerby) much of what supposedly underlaid that script was in fact untrue, misrepresented or greatly exaggerated. The Daily Howler is probably the best known 'media monitoring' blog that has an extensive track record of criticizing bias on both sides of the political divide, although more articles are critical of right wing media bias than left.
