Zubrus remains a stalled top-six player, having put up pedestrian numbers of 35 and 27 points in the 2002-03 and 2003-04 campaigns, respectively.
Zubrus declined to accept a qualifying offer from the Washington Capitals in Summer 2004, and signed a one-year contract with Lada Togliatti of the Russian Superleague (RSL) for the 2004-05 season as the NHL entered its year-long lockout.
Zubrus debated returning to Lada for a second season, but ultimately negotiated a two-year contract with Washington on August 15, 2005, for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
