Dakshineswar, a small place situated alongside the Vivekananda Setu, in the Hooghly district, north of Calcutta, on the East bank of Hoogli River, is famous for its temples.
In 1847, Rani Rashmoni of Bengal began the construction of the famous Dakshineswar Kali Temple.
On the West bank of Hoogli River (almost across Dakshineswar), is Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, an association founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1897.

The large temple complex was built between 1847 and 1855.The head priest died the next year, and the title was given to Ramakrishna, his brother.
The temple compound, apart from the twelve-spired main temple, contains a large courtyard surrounding the temple with rooms along it's walls.There is a bathing ghat on the Hoogly river, a bookshop, a shrine to Rani Rashmoni, a parking lot and twelve shrines dedicated to the aspects of Shiva, Kali's companion and to Radha-Krishna.
