Dale County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of General Samuel Dale. As of 2000 the population was 49,129. Its county seat is Ozark.
History Dale County was established on December 22, 1824.
Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,457 km˛ (563 mi˛). 1,453 km˛ (561 mi˛) of it is land and 4 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.28% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 49,129 people, 18,878 households, and 13,629 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km˛ (88/mi˛). There are 21,779 housing units at an average density of 15/km˛ (39/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 74.38% White, 20.36% Black or African American, 0.60% Native American, 1.08% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 1.29% from other races, and 2.15% from two or more races. 3.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 18,878 households out of which 36.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.00% are married couples living together, 13.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.80% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.99.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 30.30% from 25 to 44, 21.80% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older.
