Mitchell started all of Canada's matches in their quarterfinal showing at the 1984 Summer Olympics and the 1986 World Cup finals. Following retiring, Mitchell coached the 86ers reserves sqad and was first-team assistant coach from 1995 to 1999, when he succeeded Carl Valentine as the club's head coach (as the club changed their name to the Vancouver Whitecaps).
