Dallam County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 6,222. Its county seat is Dalhart6. Dallam is named for James Wilmer Dallam, a lawyer and newspaper publisher.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,899 km˛ (1,505 mi˛). 3,897 km˛ (1,505 mi˛) of it is land and 1 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,222 people, 2,317 households, and 1,628 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km˛ (4/mi˛). There are 2,697 housing units at an average density of 1/km˛ (2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 82.64% White, 1.64% Black or African American, 0.90% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 12.41% from other races, and 2.20% from two or more races. 28.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,317 households out of which 39.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.10% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 26.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.24.


In the county, the population is spread out with 31.80% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 20.60% from 45 to 64, and 10.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 102.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.30 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $27,946, and the median income for a family is $33,558. Males have a median income of $27,244 versus $19,000 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,653. 14.10% of the population and 11.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.40% of those under the age of 18 and 24.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Dallam County (A-2) is located in the far northwestern corner of the Texas Panhandle; its western border abuts New Mexico, and its northern boundary borders Oklahoma.
Dallam County comprises approximately 1,505 square miles of the rolling grasslands of the Panhandle.
In 1980 the county numbered 6,531 occupants; in 1990 the population was 5,461 with 425 living in Texline and 4,001 of Dalhart's 6,246 residents living in Dallam County.
