The orchestra traces its origins back to a concert given by a 40 strong group in 1900 with the conductor Hans Kreissig. It continued to perform, and grow in numbers and stature, so that in 1945 it was in a position to appoint Antal DorĂ¡ti as music director. Under him, the orchestra became fully professional. Subsequent music directors have included Georg Solti and Eduardo Mata. Since 1992 Andrew Litton has held the position, however, his final season is the 2005-2006. Litton has the work's measure perfectly, balancing the visionary with the prosaic, and teasing out the most complex textures of a huge orchestra and a chorus with an exemplary clarity that is flawlessly captured by the recording.
Of particular merit is the rich, singing tone that Maestro Litton gets from the DallasSymphony string section, and some nice playing as well from the horns, whose prominent part is played to perfection (Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2).
Andrew Litton crammed more than 100 players from the City of Birmingham SymphonyOrchestra on to the stage, with brass reinforcements up in the gallery, for a breathtaking display of power and poise.
