Damietta Governorate (Arabic: دمياط) is one of the governorates of Egypt. It is in the north of the country. Its capital is the city of Damietta. The governorate of Damietta is famous by its Guava farms, specially in Senaniya and Kafr El-Battikh, also the palm trees that covers the coast from Ras El-Barr at east to Gamasa at west, and from the sea at north to Reyad village at south – except at the Dumyat Al-Jadida (New Damietta). Palm trees exceeds one and a half million .Damietta exported about 1.2 million palm trees to many countries , especially Greece and China. Area

The governorate's area is 1.029 km² or about 5% of the Delta's area,and about 1% of the Egypt area. The occupied area is 589.2 km², the village has 546.4 km² from it or about 92.7%. It is famous of producing wheat, maize, cotton, rice, potatoes, lemon, grapes and tomatoes.


Its population – according to 1999 count – was 953,430, among of them is 691,687 with a percentage of 72,5% of the total population. The average rate of population growth is 2.09% per year.


Administration Division

The governorate consists of 4 central administrations, 10 cities, 35 local villager unit, 59 villages and 722 sub-villages (Kafr) . The names of the central administrations are Damietta Central (Markaz Dumyat), Faraskur Central (Markaz Faraskur), Zarqa Central (Markas Al-Zarqa), Kafr Saad Central (Markaz Kafr Saad). The governorate includes 7 collages and institutes, 19 professional training centers, 657 pre-collage schools with a percent of 61% in the villages (ie. 403 schools) and 56 Azhar schools half of them are in the villages. Damietta is famous of its skilled carpenters and furniture, these productions are not sold only inside Egypt and Arab countries, but also in Europe and the USA. These productions are made in small to large workshops (Singular : Warsha – Arabic : ورشة Plural : Werash – Arabic : ورش ) that has a very skilled carpenters. It's also famous of sweet making, Sardine packing, dairy specially Damiettian cheese.
