Very little is known about Daly's early life other than the fact of his birth in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York, on 11 November 1873, and the fact that he was a newsboy and something of a fighter for his weight and size.
Dan Daly's service was varied and included sea duty aboard the USS Newark, Panther, Cleveland, Marietta, Mississippi, Ohio, and Machias.

Dan Daly deserved THREE Medals of Honor, but he was under the command of the U.S. Army (General "Black Jack" Pershing) and they didn't want to give a Marine a third medal, even though he deserved it.
