Donovan was married twice, and is the father of television presenter Daisy Donovan, founder of Rockstar Games Terry Donovan and musician DanDonovan (of Big Audio Dynamite).

Donovan served as chairman of the Staten Island September 11th Memorial Advisory Committee, and as the Borough President's liaison to the Department of Education, the uniform services of New York City and the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management.
