Encyclopedia > Dan Luger

Born: 11th January 1975 Dan Luger is an English rugby union player, most famous for two things:

  • Scoring a last minute try in an England versus Australia match.
  • Coming on as an illegal substitute during the England-Samoa game at the 2003 Rugby World Cup, leading to dispute over whether England should be fined, or perhaps even docked points.

Luger currently plays club rugby in France for Perpignan. He is almost equally well-known for his pace and his susceptibility to injuries. He displayed both of these tendancies when an injury ended his part in the tour of Australia by the British Lions in 2001 following some previous excellent play. His father, Darko Luger, is the head of Croatia's rugby federation.

Dan Luger has further complicated matters for Lions coach Graham Henry with the news that he has suffered a facial injury and is definitely out of Saturday's match with New South Wales.
Henry and his backroom staff are concerned that Luger may have picked up a fracture or a concussion.
If that proves to be the case, Luger would be forced to take an automatic 21-day rest and this would certainly upset Henry's plans as Luger was expected to feature in his first Test team.

Luger made contact with Mike Friday in the summer and Friday was pleased to invite Luger to train with his young sevens squad.
Dan is living in Croatia but flew over to join up with the rest of the squad, including his old NEC Harlequins team mate Ugo Monye, at training this week.
Luger knows that fitness is key to his potential sevens success and said, "I have had a bit of time out since a knee operation in the summer and have been working hard to rebuild my fitness levels.
