Dana is a town located in Vermillion County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 662. It is primarily a farming community.


Famed World War II war correspondent Ernie Pyle was born on a tenant farm near Dana.


Geography

Dana is located at 39°48'24" North, 87°29'39" West (39.806714, -87.494256)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 662 people, 252 households, and 187 families residing in the town. The population density is 881.4/km² (2,255.4/mi²). There are 288 housing units at an average density of 383.4/km² (981.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.58% White, 0.60% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 252 households out of which 33.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.7% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% are non-families. 23.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.05.


In the town the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.3 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $34,750, and the median income for a family is $38,182. Males have a median income of $30,313 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,603. 9.9% of the population and 6.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.4% of those under the age of 18 and 9.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
