Murzyn was dealt to the Vancouver Canucks at the trade deadline in 1991, where he would ultimately spend the majority of his career. He quickly became a key contributor on an up-and-coming Vancouver squad, and formed an enduring partnership on the team's blueline with Jyrki Lumme which lasted most of the 1990s. He was a member of the Canuck team which reached the 1994 Stanley Cup finals, but was injured in the opening round and replaced by Brian Glynn. Murzyn was a steady defensive defender who was noted for his strength in dealing with opposing forwards in front of the net and in the corners. He was also noted for his lack of footspeed which often drew the ire of Canuck fans, especially late in his career. He styled himself as a classical enforcer, but his relatively small size amongst enforcers and rudimentary fighting skills left him largely lacking in this category. Perhaps in response, he earned a reputation for his sometimes-inexplicable brutality, largely the result of an unprovoked 1991 "sucker punch"-style attack on San Jose Sharks forward Ulf Dahlen in which, following a drive on the Vancouver net, he suddenly grabbed Dahlen, body-slammed him to the ice headfirst, kneed him in the head, and rabbit-punched him twice in the neck before finally being restrained by officials. Murzyn received a match penalty for "Intent to Injure" for the attack as well as a 7-game suspension from the NHL.
