Encyclopedia > Dance basic topics

These should be the most basic topics in the field--topics about which we'd like to have articles soon. Please see the most basic encyclopedia article topics for general instructions on constructing this list.

Specific dances should be listed in the non-categorized alphabetical List of dances.

Dance terms that do not call for more than 2-3 phrases should be put into the corresponding glossaries: Glossary of ballroom dance terms, Glossary of ballet terms: this often provides a better context for reader's understanding.

For ease of tracking changes, List of dance topics is maintained (excluding the entries of the List of dances).

Requests may be added to the Requested articles: Dance and dancers list.

Dance categories

The categories below are not mutually exclusive. For example, Tango is doubtless a partner dance. While it is mostly social dance, its ballroom form may be competitive dance, especially within DanceSport. At the same time we enjoy it as performance dance, whereby it may well be a solo dance. There are tangos among round dances, and certainly participation dances can involve tango mixers. One might remember that at times it was a forbidden erotic dance (it really is, isn't it?). Finally, some try to trace its roots to African ceremonial dances. Not to say that tango dance reaches beyond these categories: into ice dancing, burlesque and more.

Partner dance - definition of Partner dance in Encyclopedia (519 words)
Partner dances are the dances whose basic choreography involves coordinated dancing of two partners, as opposed to individuals dancing alone or individually in a non-coordinated manner, and as opposed to groups of people dancing simultaneously in a coordinated manner.
Partner dance may be a basis of a formation dance, a round dance, or a sequence dance.
These are kinds of group dance where the dancers form couples and dance either the same routines (pre-choreographed or called) or routines within a common choreography that controls both how the each couple dances together and how each couple moves in accord with other couples.
