The book follows FBI Special Agent, Aloysius Pendergast and his sidekick, Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta. Pendergast was last seen at the end of BRIMSTONE (Book One) buried alive behind a brick wall in Castel Fosco. His estranged brother, Diogenes, rescued him and nursed him back to health. However this was not a true act of kindness; Diogenes had a dark agenda and needed his brother alive in order to carry out his nefarious plans.

Hence a hopeful ward of Pendergast's, Constance Greene, requested D'Agosta's presence for a very important meeting. Vincent is shown a letter written by Pendergast many months before, about his brother Diogenes. Pendergast, having written down that he not knows of Diogenes whereabouts, but in fact knows one thing. A date. January 28th. D'Agosta presumes that this date is the date of Diognes greatest crime. Having been hated and hating his family, Diogenes obviously cannot be trusted.
