Personal stories and twists | | This article does not cite any references or sources. (November 2007) Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unverifiable material may be challenged and removed. | DWTS differs from regular dance competitions in its use of personal stories, which generate audience engagement. In between dances, the show tells stories about competitors' family lives, fears, hopes, conflicts, personal dramas, and training obstacles. Another major component of the show's appeal is suspense. In Season 5, some of the more dramatic twists have been: - Week One - Week Three: Samantha Harris was on maternity leave for the first three weeks of the competition. Season 2 champion Drew Lachey took her place during her absence[3].
- Week Two: Albert Reed was eliminated which shocked the judges as they thought he would stay in the competition longer[4].
- Week Two/Three: Jane Seymour's mother died the afternoon of the Week Two show. Jane returned home, but decided to continue with the competition in honor of her mother. In Week Three, her next dance (the Tango) left Carrie Anne Inaba in tears. The judges gave Jane a 27/30 (her highest score in the competition)[5].
- Week Two/Three: In Week Two Jennie Garth and Derek Hough fell to the floor at the end of their quickstep, but in Week Three came back with a tango that landed them just one point from the top of the leaderboard. Judge Bruno Tonioli called it "the comeback of the season". Jennie and Derek performed their tango again the next night as the encore performance.[5]
- Week Four: Mel B wound up in the bottom two despite a score of 26/30[6].
- Week Four: There was much controversy as to whether or not Jane Seymour and Jennie Garth did a lift in their dances. Carrie Ann Inaba gave them each 8s, however Len Goodman gave Jennie a 10 (to the shock of the other judges, the audience, and Jennie)[6].
- Week Five: Marie Osmond fainted at the start of her post-dance comments. The show quickly cut to an extended five minute commercial break. Upon returning, Marie waited backstage for her scores (although the medics felt she should not) and then retired to her trailer. She returned at the very end of the show[7].
- Week Five: Jane Seymour landed in the bottom two despite receiving a 26/30 and praise from the judges. Carrie Anne Inaba said she was in "absolute shock"[7].
- Week Five: Mark Cuban was eliminated; the twist was that he had lasted through Week Five even though he had either the lowest score or second lowest score out of all the contestants up until this point[7][5])[6] save for week 1[3].
- Week Six: Sabrina Bryan, the presumed front runner, was eliminated. This was called "the most shocking elimination in the history of the show" by host Tom Bergeron. After hearing the crowd's boos, he added, "This is the most vocal our audience has been in five seasons. We are all shocked here tonight." Carrie Anne Inaba was in tears. Tom then stated, "I don't usually tip my hand here, but I had you so pegged for the finals". The elimination also left the remaining dancers in shock. Melanie Brown stated, "I think they need to recount the votes." In six weeks, Sabrina had placed first for three weeks and second (by one point) for two more weeks. Sabrina also received at least one 9 everdance she performned, with the exception for her 30/30 dance. She was eliminated with a 25/30 from her foxtrot. The following week, most of the other dancers painted a cheetah paw print somewhere on their bodies to show support for Sabrina and Mark. She was also the earliest in all 5 seasons to recieve 30/30, recieving it 4th week.[8].
- Week Six: Jane Seymour did not make it to the results show because of a case of food poisoning that landed her in the hospital[9].
- Week Seven (off show): Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas revealed that they were beginning a romantic relationship after they were eliminated from the competition. [10] On November 7th, they supposedly said that they are engaged, although it remains unclear whether they were serious or joking. TMZ spotted them leaving a restaurant and asked "When's the wedding?" to which Sabrina responded "August of '08," and then looked over at Mark and laughed.
- Week Seven: Marie Osmond's father, George, died the day of the results show. She skipped the show that evening but was revealed to be safe from elimination. The night before his death, Marie and Jonathan Roberts performed while wearing navy outfits because her parents met in the navy; Marie's hair was done up to resemble her late mother's hair. The following night, Jonathan said that Marie called her father and told him the dance would be dedicated to him. He saw her performance before he passed on. As was the case with Jane Seymour, Marie decided to continue on with the competition. This dance was repeated on the Oprah show that paid tribute to her father's death[11].
- Week Nine: Marie Osmond received the lowest score for the past two weeks, yet she still managed to enter the finals while Jennie Garth who had achieved her two best scores of the season was eliminated. When asked if he thought Jennie Garth or Helio Castroneves should be eliminated, Len Goodman said "neither" (possibly alluding to the fact that Marie should have been sent home).
- Week Nine: Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas performed during the result show during Complicated, by Avril Lavinge.
- Week Ten: Helio Castroneves storming off the set after not being able to speak during the interview with Samantha Harris.
