Dania Beach is a city located in Broward County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,061.


Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which is located between Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, Florida, is located in Dania Beach.

History

The first city in Broward County dating back to the 1880's. Starting as a settlement called Modello, it was incorporated in November, 1904. Most of the 35 residents were of Danish ancestry, and they changed the name of the town to Dania.


Geography

Dania Beach is located at 26°3'18" North, 80°9'11" West (26.054916, -80.153119)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.3 km² (6.3 mi²). 15.8 km² (6.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.49% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,061 people, 9,012 households, and 4,866 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,271.9/km² (3,294.2/mi²). There are 10,847 housing units at an average density of 687.7/km² (1,781.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 70.14% White, 23.74% African American, 0.30% Native American, 1.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.27% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. 12.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 9,012 households out of which 21.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.9% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.0% are non-families. 35.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.85.


In the city the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $34,125, and the median income for a family is $37,405. Males have a median income of $35,081 versus $26,535 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,795. 18.3% of the population and 14.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.6% of those under the age of 18 and 16.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
