He was born in Algiers, Algeria, to French parents who were both opera singers. His starring role in Jean de Florette brought him onto the world stage, and he is now one of the best known and most popular actors in France. His ten-year relationship with actress Emmanuelle Béart, his co-star in films such as the acclaimed Un Coeur En Hiver (A Heart in Winter), and with whom he had a daughter named Nelly in 1992, ended in divorce.
