Early career

His former clubs are Rosenborg Ballklub and Skeid. Before signing for Rosenborg, Braaten had attracted interest from various clubs in Norway and abroad, and had a trial with French side RC Lens in late 2003 with Daniel Fredheim Holm. Braaten studerte Idrettsfag ved Bjerke videregående skole fra 1998 til 2001, og fikk oppfølging av Kjell Sverre Hansen Wold både som lærer og trener.
I 2003 ble Braaten landskjent da han egenhendig tok ballen fra egen banehalvdel, rundet Vålerengas kaptein Kjetil Rekdal og skåret 3-1-målet i kvartfinalen i NM.
