Daniel Stokols is Professor of Planning, Policy, and Design and Dean Emeritus of the School of Social Ecology at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Stokols received his B.A. degree at the University of Chicago and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His recent research has examined factors that influence the success of transdisciplinary research and training programs. Additional areas of Dr. Stokols' research include the design and evaluation of community and worksite health promotion programs, the health and behavioral impacts of environmental stressors such as traffic congestion and overcrowding, and the application of environmental design research to urban planning and facilities design. Professor Stokols is past President of the Division of Population and Environmental Psychology of the American Psychological Association (APA) and was a recipient of the Annual Career Award of the Environmental Design Research Association in 1991 and the UC Irvine Lauds and Laurels Faculty Achievement Award in 2003. After attending college at the University of Chicago, Stokols began his doctoral studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in social psychology where he also took minors in Sociology, City and Regional Planning, and participated in research projects at the School of Public Health. In 1973, after earning his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina, Stokols was recruited as an Assistant Professor by the Program in Social Ecology at the University of California, Irvine. Between 1988-1998, Stokols served as Director of the Program in Social Ecology and then as Dean of the new School of Social Ecology once the UC Regents designated the unit officially as a “school” in May 1992.
