Dannemora is a town located in Clinton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,149.


The Town of Dannemora contains a village also called Dannemora. The town was formed in 1854 from the Town of Beekmantown

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 170.4 km˛ (65.8 mi˛). 153.3 km˛ (59.2 mi˛) of it is land and 17.1 km˛ (6.6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 10.06% water.


The town is within the Adirondack State Park on the west side of the county.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,149 people, 850 households, and 584 families residing in the town. The population density is 33.6/km˛ (87.0/mi˛). There are 1,253 housing units at an average density of 8.2/km˛ (21.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 56.30% White, 32.34% Black or African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 8.95% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 15.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 850 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% are non-families. 26.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.91.


In the town the population is spread out with 10.3% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 53.6% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 367.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 446.6 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $37,805, and the median income for a family is $43,850. Males have a median income of $27,045 versus $25,132 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,614. 14.2% of the population and 13.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Chazy Lake -- A lake centrally located in the town.
  • Chazy Lake -- A hamlet on the west side of Chazy Lake.
  • Clinton Correctional Facility -- (also known as "Dannemora") One of New York State's maximum-security prisons is located in the Village of Dannemora (Lucky Luciano once served time there). The site also formerly housed the state's mental hospital for the criminally insane, and since New York State restored the death penalty in 1995, the prison has held the state's death row inmates.
  • Dannemora -- The Village of Dannemora is on the south town line.

Dannemora's director filed a petition in the Surrogate's Court stating that petitioner's sentence was expiring and requesting that he be civilly committed under 384 of the N. Correction Law.
He was then transferred from prison to Dannemora State Hospital, an institution under the jurisdiction and control of the New York Department of Correction and used for the purpose of confining and caring for male prisoners declared mentally ill while serving a criminal sentence.
In November 1961, the director of Dannemora filed a petition in the Surrogate's Court of Clinton County stating that Baxstrom's penal sentence was about to terminate and requesting that he be civilly committed pursuant to 384 of the New York Correction Law.
