Bergara began his playing career at the age of 16 in the Uruguayan First Division, picking up a handful of under-21 caps for Uruguay, before moving to Spain in 1962 where he was top scorer for Real Mallorca for four seasons and Sevilla for two seasons. Bergara also managed the Brunei National team and the England Under-18 and Under-20 sides, with a World Youth Cup win also to his name. Finally, after Assistant Manager positions at Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United, he was installed as Manager at Doncaster Rovers, at the same time as the club were featured in a Channel 4 'fly-on-the-wall' documentary. Sadly it has been reported today on a Stockport County mailing list by a friend of the family, 18th July 2007, that Danny has recently had a stroke, following on from a previous stroke suffered in March 2007. He has been discharged from hospital and is staying in a nursing home close to his home. All the best wishes Danny from all at Stockport County.
