The present Dantewada district has come into existence in 1998. Previously it was a Tehsil of Bastar district therefore it consists of all the Bastaria features. Virtually it is the southern part of the Bastar region which is known as South Bastar where Bastaria culture is still alive. A place known for the oldest inhabitance of India holding its own world without losing its way of life, its virtues, its dancing, its songs, its folklore, its mirth and laughter, Dantewada derives its name from the capital town of the district, named after the presiding deity of the town ‘Ma Danteshwari’. Ma Danteshwari ,the most revered and worshipped Goddess, by the people living in this area, is an incarnation of Shakti. Dantewada is believed to be one among the 52 sacred Shakti pithas of the Hindu Mythology. Sharing boarders with three different states with different cultures and traditions, Maharashtra to the west, Orissa to the East and Andhra Pradesh to the south the district had acquired a very rare blend of legacy in culture. Encompassing with hilly tracks, dales and valleys, numerous brooks and rivers, lush green and virgin forests, Dantewada is a paradise to the lovers of nature.Dantewada is also a home of different species of wild life such as the Tiger, Leopard, Deer, and Bison etc. Two species, which give Dantewada a cut above the rest, are the Pahadi Maina and the Wild Buffalo(Bubalus bubalis).
