Darby Township is a township located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 9,622.


Geography

Darby_Township is located at 39°54'28" North, 75°17'21" West (39.907962, -75.289325)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 3.7 km˛ (1.4 mi˛). 3.7 km˛ (1.4 mi˛) of it is land and 0.70% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,622 people, 3,670 households, and 2,653 families residing in the township. The population density is 2,598.0/km˛ (6,739.2/mi˛). There are 3,868 housing units at an average density of 1,044.4/km˛ (2,709.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is 62.29% White, 36.35% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,670 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 21.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.13.


In the township the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 85.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.5 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $37,396, and the median income for a family is $43,357. Males have a median income of $36,259 versus $29,711 for females. The per capita income for the township is $17,179. 11.8% of the population and 10.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.9% of those under the age of 18 and 11.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Upper Darby borders West Philadelphia on the east, Lansdowne Borough to the south, Haverford and Lower Merion townships to the north, and Springfield township on the west.
