Dare County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 29,967. Its county seat is Manteo6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,044 km˛ (1,562 mi˛). 993 km˛ (384 mi˛) of it is land and 3,051 km˛ (1,178 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 75.44% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 29,967 people, 12,690 households, and 8,451 families residing in the county. The population density is 30/km˛ (78/mi˛). There are 26,671 housing units at an average density of 27/km˛ (70/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 94.75% White, 2.66% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 2.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,690 households out of which 27.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.00% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.79.
In the county the population is spread out with 21.40% under the age of 18, 6.30% from 18 to 24, 30.80% from 25 to 44, 27.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older.
